HDU is a key research oriented university with its own distinctive features in electronic science and technology, engineering and information technology as well as management, economics and accounting. HDU is approved as one of the five key provincial universities in 2015 among more than one hundred public colleges and universities.

Founded in 1956, HDU has 5 campuses spread throughout downtown and Xiasha, the Higher Education Park and Economic Development Zone and Xiasha Campus is HDU main campus which has over 20,000 full- time students and 2,300 staff with 1600 teachers including 690 professors and associate professors.

HDU has 21 schools and research institutes and offers 57 undergraduate programs, 54 postgraduate programs and 3 Ph.D. programs in engineering, management, economics, science, literature, law and education, along with multiple interactive disciplines and specialties.
